Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo alias Sunday Igboho, has been arrested in Cotonou, Benin Republic.
A top security personnel reportedly told PUNCH that Igboho was arrested at an airport in Cotonou on Monday night.
The activist’s arrest comes about three weeks after the Department of State Services (DSS) raided his residence, killed two of his supporters, arrested others and declared him wanted for being in possession of arms and ammunition.
Igboho, however, had denied being in possession of arms, stressing that his only crime was fighting for his peoples’ safety after several incursions by Fulani herdsmen.
According to the publication, he will be repatriated to Nigeria on Tuesday, July 20, 2021, from the Benin Republic, one of Nigeria’s neighbouring countries in the West African sub region.
“He was arrested in Cotonou while he tried to travel out on Monday night. His destination was Germany. The security forces in Benin Republic should repatriate him to Nigeria on Tuesday,” the source had told the newspaper.
The Federal Government of Nigeria had placed the Nigeria Immigration Service and the Nigeria Customs Service on alert to stop Igboho from leaving the country.
The activist had earlier in the year issued an eviction notice to Fulani herdsmen residing in Igangan, Ibarapa North West Council of Oyo State after acts of violence like kidnapping, rape and robbery were credited to them.
Meanwhile, neither Igboho’s crew nor the DSS has confirmed this development.
