Twitter ban: Confusion as govt agencies revert to old ways of information dissemination

After days of threatening to arrest and prosecute any Nigerian who violates the ban on twitter, the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), decided to visit twitter to deactivate his account to show solidarity with the Federal Government which had suspended the social media platform last Friday.

The Federal Government had last week suspended Twitter barely two days after the social media platform deleted a genocidal Tweet by President Muhammadu Buhari, in an apparent reference to the Biafra war which many found repugnant.

Malami had on Saturday threatened to prosecute and jail Nigerians who were still using the Virtual Private Networks to access Twitter even though no Nigerian law makes it illegal to tweet.

But earlier today, Malami took to his Facebook page, posting a photo with a caption which read, “My Twitter account deactivated’.

The post got his followers asking how he accessed Twitter without using Virtual Private Network, VPN.

But it is obvious the AGF downloaded the VPN in order to visit Twitter to deactivate it.

His actions has got many musing how Malami who is the chief law officer of the nation, had done nothing but undermine the constitution he ought to protect. Many Nigerians have since berated him for his hypocritical action.
