The two accountants behind the bungle that saw ‘La La Land’ accidentally awarded Best Picture at the Oscars have been sacked by the Academy. The PricewaterhouseCoopers accountants, Brian Cullinan and Martha Ruiz would no longer be involved in Hollywood’s most prestigious awards ceremony. They however remain with the company.
Although their employer is sticking by the accountants, the president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is not. Cheryl Boone Isaacs, the President of the Academy of Motion Pictures revealed that they will never work at the Oscars again. She also said the Academy was reviewing its relationship with PwC, which has been responsible for counting and safeguarding the Oscar results for 83 years.
Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway presented the Best Picture Oscar prize at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Monday but were given the wrong envelope, so mistakenly announced that La La Land had won the night’s most coveted honour instead of Moonlight. Stars Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, director Damien Chazelle and producers had taken to the stage and began their acceptance speeches when it was revealed the real winner was Moonlight, and La La Land producer Jordan Horowitz held up the real card to the camera to prove it.
Not only have the two PricewaterhouseCoopers accountants been banned from the Oscars for their epic blunder, they’re now getting death threats and have both been assigned bodyguards after their personal information was posted online.
