The ancient town of Okada in Ovia North East Local Government  in Edo state came alive on Saturday as a few distinguished individuals were honoured by Igbinedion University Okada during its 17th convocation ceremony

One of the major highlights of the occasion was the conferment of Honorary Doctorate Degrees on  former Nigerian President, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, Lagos monarch, HRM Oba Saheed Ademola Elegushi, Togolese  Business mogul, Mr Bertin Sow Agba and Nollywood Star, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde. That was not all, renowned professor of Technical Education, Prof. Olu Aina was honoured as the university’s first Emeritus Professor.

The exciting Convocation Ceremony held at the main auditorium of Igbinedion University, which is Nigeria’s first private university. Guests who were present for the ceremony were the Chancellor, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, Deputy Chancellors Lady Cherry Igbinedion and Chief Lucky Igbinedion, Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, General Alani Akinrinade ( Rtd), Chief Bisi Akande, High Chief Chiedu Nweke, Prince Bisi Olatilo,  Prof. Lilian Imuetinyan Salami, Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu, Hon. Lekan Bakare, Prince Anofi Elegushi, Chief Mike Oghiadome,  Hon. Anselm Ojezua,  Hon. Omosede Igbinedion,  Tope Oyefeso, Dapo Amao and Ovation Editor, Michael Effiong.

In his acceptance speech, Dr Jonathan said he was delighted that the university chose to honour him after leaving office. He bemoaned what he termed political coup d’etat happening in Nigeria with the rampant election violence and urged politicians to be less desperate and more selfless. He encouraged governments at all levels to fund education as it was the foundation to Nigeria’s quest for greatness.
