The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says it has arrested two suspects on the list released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). According to Aminu Aliyu, head of Abuja zonal office, Chika Augustine and Godspower Nwachukwu, the suspects, were arrested in Abuja. He said $35,000 was recovered from Augustine during the arrest.

The zonal head disclosed that the EFCC in collaboration with the FBI had earlier arrested one other suspect in December 2018. He said the zonal office had recovered N423, 006 million, $39,253 and €2,330 between January and August.

“Prior to the release of the FBI list, we had in collaboration with the FBI, cases under investigation of which two suspects indicted in the list released by the FBI are in our custody. On the other hand, another suspect on the list is being investigated independently on a different case and his case is pending arraignment,” he said.

He also noted that the Abuja zonal office had recorded 33 convictions from January till date, saying collaborative operations with other zones resulted to 293 arrests and over 465 cases which are under investigations. He said 90 arrests were made mostly through intelligence gathering while 21 convictions were secured by the cybercrime unit.

Aliyu added that the anti-graft agency recovered exotic cars and property suspected to have been acquired through the proceeds of crime which would be forfeited after convictions had been secured. The EFCC had made several arrests since the FBI released a list of 77 Nigerians allegedly involved in what it described as one of the largest scams in US history.
