Celebrated author, Chimamandah Adichie has been honoured by the prestigious Yale University in the United States of America. She was conferred with the Doctors of Letters, Honoris Causa at its 318th graduation ceremony
Chimamandah was one of the 11 individuals who have achieved distinction in their fields, honored by the institution. The award-winning author shared her latest achievement via her Instagram page on Monday, June 10, 2019. Chimamandah who likes to refer to herself as a feminist, also the Yale Class Day Speaker as part of activities marking the graduation ceremony of the class of 2019.
This is Chimamanda’s second degree from the university. In 2008, she received a Master of Arts degree in African studies from Yale. The degree from Yale is coming days after Chimamanda got two Doctor of Humane Letters honorary degrees from American University and Georgetown University.
On Chimamandah, Yale wrote: “Your stories of war, migration, home, and heartbreak bring the great richness and multiplicity of human experience to life. With courage and clarity, you call us to “do better” for women and girls, for ourselves and future generations around the globe. In appreciation for your superb talent and leadership in literature and the public sphere, we are honored to present your second Yale degree, Doctor of Letters.”
Chimamanda Adichie keeps adding more feathers to her already overflowing cap and we can’t but admire her passion and zeal towards her career. About a year ago, she was honoured by Duke University in the United States with an honourary degree.
Chimamandah was one of the few recipients bestowed with honorary degrees from the university and they were all described as people making changes in the world in very extensive ways. “Few writers have captured the challenges of immigrants and others navigating those changes as Adichie,” the university said.
Others honoured with the degree are: the CEO of General Motors, Mary Barra; former Durham, Mayor William Bell; Phil Freelon, lead architect for the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture; Dr. William Kaelin, professor of medicine at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School; and Attorney Russell M. Robinson II.
