Former Nigerian International Footballer, Nwankwo Kanu, is currently not in a good mood after suspected vandals invaded his The Hardley Apartments along Waziri Ibrahim Crescent in Victoria Island. The vandals made away with his football medals, trophies, plaques and other valuable items. The hotel has been under lock and key since 2015 after an alleged default in transaction between it and the then Skye bank, now Polaris Bank.

A shocked Nwankwo Kanu while in London learnt that the property has been occupied by some authorized persons who had commenced renovation of the facility in disregard of the seal order and litigation, forcing him to arrive Nigeria over the weekend to verify the claims. The last hearing on the matter came up in November 2018 after which the case was adjourned till January 31.

“I almost couldn’t recognise the hotel as belonging to me anymore. This is the saddest day of my life as I cannot understand why this happen to me when the matter has yet to be settled in court. All the medals I have earned, in addition to the Olympic torch that I cherished are all gone and I don’t even know who to ask for all these prized assets, he lamented.”

“This is unacceptable in all ramifications. I have not been served any notice that I have lost this property and until I am served the notice, it remains my legal property. In fact the four-year seal of the facility had affected treatment for numerous patients that his Kanu Heart Foundation planned to rescue from their ailment. We have used proceeds from the hotel business to effect treatment for the patients over the years and now we are being forced to seek funds elsewhere, a situation that has stalled the treatment considerably, especially since 2016,” the former Super Eagles’ captain was further quoted as saying.

The footballer complained bitterly that cars and buses belonging to the hotel were equally moved without knowledge. According to Shina Philips a close friend and associate to Kanu Nwankwo, for someone that has served and still serving this country meritoriously, he does not deserve this kind of treatment.
“He was in tears as we drove away from the hotel,” he added.

Among many other highs, Kanu led Nigeria to winning the historic gold medal in the football event of the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games.
