The newly appointed Acting Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed has assumed office after her appointment by President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday to replace Kemi Adeosun, who resigned and is currently reading the handover note from her predecessor. Until her recent appointment, Ahmed was the Minister of State, Budget and National Planning.

Zainab Ahmed is expected to hold the position only on a temporary basis until the national assembly reconvenes and Buhari is able to send a replacement for senate screening. The former Finance Minister, Kemi Adeosun whom she replaced, resigned following allegations that her Certificate of Exemption from National Youth Service Corps was fake.

An accountant, Zainab Ahmed holds a degree from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and a master’s in business administration from Ogun State University, Kemi Adeosun’s home state. The daughter of Yahaya Hamza, the foster father of Nasir el-Rufai, governor of Kaduna state, Ahmed, was until her appointment as minister of state for budget and planning, the executive secretary of the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI), the extractive sector watchdog. She once worked with Mtel when Pentascope ran the mobile home arm of NITEL under a management contract.
