While Oscar voters showered the neo-musical ‘La La Land’ with 14 nominations, a tie with ‘Titanic’ and ‘All About Eve’  for the most in Academy Award history, what has really go many buzzing is the fact that in sharp contrast to the previous two years, when the academy put forward all-white rosters of acting nominees, voters chose the largest number of black candidates ever this year. The academy body will be honouring six black actors who featured in diverse films like ‘Moonlight’, ‘Fences’ and ‘Hidden Figures’, all three in the best picture race.

From Mahershala Ali and Naomie Harris who both received nods for their supporting work in ‘Moonlight’, to Viola Davis in ‘Fences’ to Octavia Spencer ‘Hidden Figures’ – all nominated for supporting actress as well as Ms. Negga and Denzel Washington in the lead categories for ‘Fences’. Also, four of the five nominated documentaries came from black filmmakers, including ’13th’, a searing look at race and mass incarceration in America, by Ava DuVernay as well as ‘I Am Not Your Negro’, a portrait of the writer James Baldwin and the civil-rights era directed by Raoul Peck.

So obviously, the academy listened to the #OscarsSoWhite protests that found many berating Hollywood in a pre-ceremony rally last year. The academy made drastic membership changes in 2016, revoking the voting privileges of long-nonworking members and inviting more women and minorities to join. The 7,000-member group remains overwhelmingly white and male however.
The 89th Academy Awards will be hosted in February by talk show host, Jimmy Kimmel.
