The 6th edition of the Lagos Fashion Design Week sponsored by Heineken, the fashion event platform that aims to drive the Nigerian and ultimately, the African fashion industry; by bringing together buyers, consumers and the media to view the current collections of African designers in the fashion capital of Lagos, Nigeria, ran through October 25th to 28th at the Eko Atlantic. The event featured about 50 fashion shows, alongside showrooms, after-parties, and discussion panels with business leaders and designers.

Here are the high points from the event:

Celebrities, fashion and beauty bloggers hit the runway
At the just concluded Heineken Lagos Fashion Design Week, LFDW 2017, celebrities, beauty and fashion bloggers went on the runway for different designers.  From former Miss World, Agbani Darego who walked the runway first for the Maybelline collection, before stepping out in a bridal gown from the Andrea Iyamah collection, to fashion blogger, Efemena Adabamu who strutted the runway for Menswear designer, Johnson Johnson to  media personality, Denrele Edun who brought his energetic character to play, first for Maybelline and later for Kinabuti. Others were on air personality, Tolu Oniru-Demuren popularly known as Toolz who was one of the plus size models that walked the runway for ‘About That Curvy Life x Osuare’ one of the collections for plus sized people. She was the cynosure of eyes in a long flowing gown with a plunging neckline. Osas Ajibade sashayed for DNA by Iconic Invanity while former BBA finalist, Beverly Osu walked the runway for Kiki Kimanu. Both beauty blogger, Ezinne Alfa and fashion blogger and stylist, Tosin Ogundadegbe graced the runway for both Maybelline and ‘About That Curvy Life x Assian’ respectively. Pop singer, Davido took a bow at the end of a collection showing which was a collaboration between him and designer, Adebayo Oke-Lawal of Orange Culture. The collection which made its debuted was inspired by Davido’s hit single, ‘IF’ which was showcased a few months ago at Selfridges, London.  tooWhile leveraging on the existing collaboration between himself and bespoke designer Adebayo Oke-Lawal,Nigerian musician Davido graced the runway for Orange Culture.

Music meets runway
A few of the designers leveraged on Nigerians love for music to have artists perform while their collections were being modeled on the runway of the Lagos Fashion Design Week. Mavin record artists, Tiwa Savage and Dija performed while models strutted the runway wearing African Inspired collection by the lead sponsor of the fashion event, Heineken and Sunny Rose collections respectively.

‘The Beauty and the Beast’ of Mai Atafo’s runway show
Ace designer, Mai Atafo was the last to showcase on Day 3 of the fashion event. The designer had the crowd cheering endlessly with a drama presentation as he re-enacted the cartoon  ‘Beauty & The Beast’ on the runway. While he wore a blue suede suit, Bunmi Olunoyo, a ballet dancer who was his partner for the dance wore a flowing yellow dress that befits a princess.

 

Heineken unveiled its African Inspired Collection        
Heineken closed the Lagos Fashion Design Week on day 4 by launching its first-ever African fashion collection at the fashion event. The beer brand collaborated with Africa’s emerging talents Lulu Mutuli and Azra Walji. The collection, which is a fusion of the two designers’ concept, is the first of many designs that the brand will roll out across the world, Asia being the next port of call. The initiative is the next chapter in Heineken’s ‘Open Design Explorations’, a global co-creation programme that connects emerging creatives that gives them a platform to showcase their talent. The designs will be produced across Africa to be worn by Heineken ambassadors throughout Nigeria, East Africa and beyond.

Newton & David, Nigeria’s pioneer events and décor company and The Assembly, Nigeria’s new fashion and creative hub teamed up to host the #CreatorsLounge at the Heineken Lagos Fashion and Design Week 2017. With a very welcoming ambience, the Creators Lounge was designed to be a style haven for bloggers/press and content creators, giving them the opportunity to connect, and create content during the fashion week.
