Founder of KBK foundation, Odewale Oluseyi Ayodele has fulfilled his promise to gift Chidinma Ikpeazu the sum of N500,000 for emerging University of Nigeria Nsukka’s best graduating medical student. Recall that about two weeks ago, there was an uproar on social media when a picture of Chidinma Ikpeazu being presented with a dummy cheque of N10,000 for emerging UNN’s best graduating medical student. Many shuddered to think that after years and several sleepless nights to burn the candle, Chidinma Ikpeazu was presented with only a paltry sum of N10,000.
Comparison began to be drawn between the norm of rewarding academic excellence with paltry sums and rewarding winners of reality shows, such as Big Brother Nigeria with millions of naira. Many were quick to conclude that it wasn’t only discouraging, youths will be forced to abandon the pursuit of excellence in their academics to fulfilling aspirations to be part of the several reality shows that abound.
GT bank wasn’t left out of the fray. Many had thought that it was GT Bank that presented the student with the dummy cheque seeing that it was a replica of a real GT Bank cheque but the bank was quick to distance itself from the drama explaining that the money was issued by the association of medical students in the school to one of their own because the association keeps an account with the bank.
However with all of the complaints, one man decided to change Chidinm ’s story and make a difference in her life. Through his foundation, KBK, Odewale Oluseyi Ayodele began a manhunt for Chidinma Ikpeazu to personally reward her with the sum of N500,0000. According to him, the said amount should be the minimum cash award for academic excellence.
“I resonate with her story because I understand how much time, money and energy it takes to study medicine (successfully). I read tons of comments on why her 10k prize is an insult, on how GTB should have done the needful, on why a popular comedian who happens to be my namesake justified the stipend.
“The problem is, we talk too much without action, I expected somebody to start a crowd funding of some sort so she can be presented with a more befitting gift, like a car. Anyways, because the foundation has too many surgeries to pay for at this time, we will present the young woman with half a million naira only.”
