Two Federal Road Safety Corps officers, shot at by policemen in the convoy of the Abia Speaker wife on Saturday, have been scheduled for surgery on Monday (today) to extract bullets from their bodies.
Two policemen in the convoy of the Abia State House of Assembly speaker, Chikwendu Kalu, were said to have shot the Federal Road Safety Corps officers, who stopped the vehicle in which the Abia speaker wife was travelling, for not fastening their seat belts. The policemen also allegedly vandalised the FRSC patrol vehicles and left the two men in the pool of their own blood. It was gathered that other road users drove them to the hospital.
Meanwhile, policemen involved in the shooting have been detained on the order of the state Commissioner of Police. The Corps Education Officer, FRSC, Commander Bisi Kazeem, confirmed that the FRSC officials were in stable condition, adding that the Corps Marshal, Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi, was in touch with the hospital treating them.
He stated that the police authorities had also assured the corps that the errant cops would face the law, adding that they had been detained and would face Orderly Room trial subsequently.
“The state Commissioner of Police has assured the Corps that investigation has been launched into the incident and the two policemen have been detained. We have confidence in the police to carry out a thorough investigation and ensure that justice is done,” Kazeem said.
Meanwhile, a group, Women Arise for Change Initiative, has condemned the attack on the FRSC officers. The group’s President, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin, in an emailed statement described the assault as an escalation of attacks targeting personnel in the course of their legitimate duty.
She said, “We hereby call for an immediate arrest and prosecution of all the policemen involved and the wife of the Speaker who was with the team as of the time of the attacks as well the Speaker who was alleged to have sent reinforcement in this condemnable action.”
