Screen queen, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde is advocating for perpetrators of domestic violence to serve jail terms. This she said against the backdrop of the rising case of the social malaise and believes that it can be cured with a stiff penalty such as jail term
In a recent interview, the actress noted that the fear of knowing that they would end up in jail will deter anyone from beating up their spouse.
“Domestic violence is a disease that needs to be cured, it needs to be eradicated and it can be that’s the sad part. This is a disease that we know what the cure is, it’s right there, we just need to be bold enough to stand up for it and put a legislation in place to end it.
“Until it becomes a really punishable offence, it probably won’t stop. It’s not enough to appeal to people’s senses because the people doing it have no sense so you have to put fear in them to let them know that there are repercussions. That way, they are compelled to weigh their options; Is it worth me going to jail for, is it worth me losing all my life for, just because I’m angry and I want to beat someone? No one will admonish them to think twice before taking any untoward action.
In recent times, there has been an alarming increase in the number of domestic violence cases, all thanks to the social media which has helped bring these cases that would have otherwise never been reported. Unfortunately, most of the victims involved are usually women who are considered the weaker sex.
Also worrisome is the fact that most of the victims are compelled to remain silent before finally speaking out for fear of either being seen as unable to weather the storms of marriage or for fear of giving up full parental care for their children.
