The online outrage against singer, Falz The Bahd Guy has taken a new dimension with a few celebrities voicing out their opinion and some taking sides. While female footballer, Asisat Oshoala expresses deep concern about how people are now proud to be fraudsters, insisting that they must not be glorified, Toni Payne, the ex-wife of 9ice has fiercely defended her singer husband. Also, UK based media practitioner, Ayo Shonaiya however blames Nigerians for how deep rooted fraud has permeated into the fabric of the society.

Falz had stirred the hornets’ nest when he urged his colleagues in an interview not praise sing Yahoo boys. Many people felt he was referring to 9ice even though he didn’t mention any name. 9ice defended himself saying his single, ‘Living Things’ doesn’t in any way promote fraud.

Aisha Oshoala’s comments:
“The way people are proud of being a fraudster these days….You weren’t born with a silver spoon means you have to go against God’s commandments? We are all sinners, may Almighty Allah forgive us but this guy only passed the right message to his colleagues. Even the fraudsters know it is a sin and strive to give their kids better life. They don’t want them in the same line. So why come for the guy as if what he said isn’t right or true. E get who no dey sin? You guys should stop this drama and live with the criticism that comes with your job. As a baller, people criticize us and we just take it as what comes with the job. Fans must talk. I read that Segunwire’s post and it made me believe a lot of people have lost it. I am a sinner and I am not proud of it. The truth remains, fraudsters shouldn’t be glorified according to my Holy Quran but again said, do not judge. We are all the same, no small sin, no big sin.”

Ayo Shonaiya

Ayo Shonaiya’s comment:
“When  we danced and sang to ‘Maga Don Pay’, back then, what the f-ck did we think the younger ones will sing and dance to today? When a known 419 kingpin book artistes for shows, how many artistes turn it down? And you have to praise him at the show o! In the 70s, Juju musicians cut records, praise-singing people who later turned out to be drug dealers. This is not new in Naija. When a known fraudster sends a bucket of Ace of Spades to your section in a club. How many artistes refuse & send it back? We are not shocked at what Falz is saying in that interview. We are shocked that he’s actually saying it out loud. How dare he! Lol. If it’s a crime to glorify fraud & fraudsters, this is NOT a 9ice issue. We ALL have committed that crime at some point over the years. Falz talk him own. 9ice talk him own. But the issue is bigger than these 2 talented artistes. The deeper issue is US, yes, YOU and ME. One thing we should keep in focus is, Falz speaking out about fraudsters & fraud itself, or the glorification of fraud & fraudsters.”

9ice and Toni Payne

Toni Payne’s comment:
“Music is a form of expression. I lsitened to 2Pac when I was 14 and nothing in me said go smoke weed. ‘Mask Off’ by Future is probably one of d biggest songs of 2017. Did you go buy Molly or Percocet after listening to it? No, because you know better. I now listen to a lot of Future’s songs. His music can be intoxicatingly fun but I am not gonna run off to have ‘Rich Sex’ or ‘Trap Nigha’. Music artist like most artists, Poets inclusive, draw inspiration from their environment. Singing about it doesn’t mean you approve of it. Music is also business and most music artists will give their target market what they want. Most will churn out what sells. Truth is people enjoy a bit of naughtiness, some live vicariously through these lyrics knowing damn well they can’t do half the things in it. So if you wish to motivate the artist to give you only conscious lyrics, do so by your actions, trend conscious songs and that is what you will get. You all can argue all day but while you do, remember, you listeners chose the song as your favourite over and above so many other beautiful songs on an album. I chose what influences me, the influence doesn’t chose me.”
