Lagos State has not only recorded its first case of Lassa fever outbreak on Tuesday, the patient alongside 63 others are currently isolated and receiving treatment at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).
Akin Abayomi, the state commissioner for health said the index patient, a male, who arrived Lagos from Ebonyi state, was feeling unwell and was admitted at the Lagos Law School clinic. According to him, the victim was transferred to the Nigeria Air Force Clinic, Onikan, when he failed to respond to treatment before being moved to LUTH.
“The test was confirmed as positive on February 17, 2020, and he was immediately transferred to the isolation containment facility in LUTH. We have also identified 63 people he may have been in contact with since his arrival from Ebonyi State into Lagos. They are being monitored. If they develop any symptom of Lassa fever, we will pick them up early and isolate them so that we can break the cycle of transmission,” Abayomi said.
